You Need to Give More Thoughts to Your Finances
Why you have to take your finances serious - before life forces you to.
“Why do you always go to work every day?”
I asked my dad one evening when he got home late, curious as to why he needed to work at all—and why he couldn’t just stay at home and watch movies with my siblings and me, especially since it was the summer holidays.
Because you have to eat. He responded.
“What do you mean I have to eat?” I continued.
When I’m hungry, I just tell Mom, and she prepares food from the kitchen. You don’t need to go to work; you can just stay at home and Mom can prepare food for all of us.
He smiled, looked at me, and said
How do you think all that food gets to the kitchen? It’s because your mom and I work, earn money, and go to the market to stock up. The moment we stop working and money stops flowing, there’ll be nothing in the kitchen—and nothing for you to eat.
Now That I'm Older… It All Makes Sense
Years later, this hypothetical conversion with my dad made me reflect deeply on the reality of things. And now, as I navigate adulthood, it has never been more real to me: money is deeply connected to our daily lives.
Finance is at the core of our existence. Being able to afford our life is a fundamental price required to live. Whether it’s our basic needs—food, shelter, clothing—or essential ones like healthcare, education, and insurance, we have to pay for them. That’s why it’s called the cost of living.
Here's the Problem
Now, here’s what amazes me: a large percentage of people live with their finances on autopilot. They spend every penny that comes their way, mindlessly—drowning in unnecessary debt.
Taking your finances seriously isn’t just about affording the cost of living. It’s about unlocking freedom. Many people are stuck in jobs they don’t like, sometimes even risking their lives—just to meet responsibilities.
With no hope of ever getting ahead financially, they resign themselves to fate rather than do the hard, yet rewarding work of paying down debt, living below their means, and investing for the future.
It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way
There are timeless financial principles we can all learn—to take charge of our money and move to the next level.
From living paycheck to paycheck…
To financial stability…
To financial independence…
To leaving a legacy for our descendants…
There’s a path we can all follow.
What's Next
Next week, we’ll begin by exploring the fundamentals of money management, as we work toward optimizing our financial lives together.
To a simpler financial life,
Adedoyin.
